Texas’s Compassionate Use Program (CUP) continues to expand, allowing eligible patients to access low-THC cannabis as part of their medical care. Because Texas operates differently from most medical cannabis states, patients do not receive a medical marijuana card or hold a state-issued registration. Instead, access depends on an ongoing clinical relationship with a CUP-authorized physician who prescribes low-THC cannabis through the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas (CURT).

Do you have to renew your recommendation for low-THC cannabis in Texas?

Yes—patients must renew their prescription, not a registration or card.

Under the Texas Compassionate Use Act, patients are not issued an official registration or identification card. Instead, their physician enters a prescription directly into CURT, which dispensaries use to verify eligibility. Because Texas law does not specify a fixed duration for patient access, each physician determines how long a prescription remains valid based on the patient’s medical needs.

As a result, continued access to low-THC cannabis requires periodic follow-up appointments with a CUP-authorized physician. When a prescription expires, the physician must issue a new prescription in CURT before the patient may obtain additional low-THC cannabis.
